Neoenergia highlights investments and actions for a more sustainable future on World Environment Day

A paragraph is a self-contained unit of a discourse in writing dealing with a particular point or idea. Paragraphs are usually an expected part of formal writing, used to organize longer prose.

The company's initiatives promote awareness and encouragement of renewable energy and the preservation of the planet.

On an increasingly relevant date, Neoenergia reinforces its commitment to sustainable development through initiatives that promote awareness in society and the preservation of the environment. On this World Environment Day, the company remembers one of its main pillars, which is the robust investment in renewable energy. In the first quarter of 2021 alone, R$ 461 million were allocated to the development of this business area, a large part of which for the company's wind projects.

“Neoenergia will continue to act responsibly, taking care of ecosystems and respecting the environment, with a focus on promoting fully sustainable economic and social development. We adopt a strategy based on generating renewable energy, building increasingly smarter networks and providing solutions for our consumers in order to affirm our contribution to energy transition", completes Francisco Carvalho, Neoenergia's Superintendent of Innovation and Sustainability.

To complement the strategy, as an excellent practice, Neoenergia has an Environmental Management System, which follows global corporate guidelines and enables the development of a common environmental structure among the Group's companies. It also aims to measure and evaluate its environmental performance in accordance with different business plans, respecting regional standards and specificities of each country.

In this environmental journey, the company works to reduce emissions and carry out the inventory of its' own greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, verified by independent auditors, which allows the identification of opportunities and necessary strategies to reach the goal of neutralizing carbon emissions by 2050.

The company's actions go beyond generating more sustainable energy, also promoting various initiatives in its internal areas. At Hydroelectric Power Plants they carry out numerous environmental projects, such as reforestation in the surrounding regions, ensuring the preservation, maintenance and increase of the local flora, as well as the recovery of river sources. Altogether, 128 springs were recovered and nine areas along the rivers were revitalized, between the states of Pará and Mato Grosso.

The Transmission area, in turn, can highlight the program to drive away and rescue fauna, which protects animals close to the operating locations of the Group's subsidiaries. The company also promotes the rainwater harvesting project, with the purpose of reusing a natural resource that is abundant in certain periods and regions in Brazil.

These and other initiatives are in line with Neoenergia's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established by the United Nations (UN). Among the 17 goals, Neoenergia prioritizes the meeting of SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action) and directly contributes on a daily basis to SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 15 (Life on Land) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Importance of the date to the world

Created during the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, in 1972, the World Environment Day became a relevant call to all areas of the population regarding environmental problems. The date emphasizes the importance of preserving natural resources and their conscientious use, without harming the future of the planet.

The event, which became known as the Stockholm Conference, related to the place where it was held, started a new way of thinking about environmental issues around the world, in addition to establishing the basic principles to guide environmental policy across countries.
