Neoenergia is a partner of Rock in Rio in a #PelaDescarbonização movement

Desafio DescarbonizAê

A Neoenergia e o Rock in Rio uniram forças para um desafio: descarbonizar o maior festival de música do mundo. Participe e traga soluções inovadoras para tornar o evento ainda mais sustentável.
Originally organized in Rio de Janeiro, Rock in Rio is a megafestivals of music created in Brazil and held since 1985. It was through him that a series of great international artists performed for the first time in South America, with iconic shows such as Queen and Guns N' Roses. There are several days of event, which brings together national and foreign musicians, and is currently held every two years.

As famous as it is for its music, the festival, considered the sixth largest in the world in terms of public, is also a case of sustainability. Since its first edition, Rock in Rio has proposed transformation and attitude, and since then many actions have been carried out for the benefit of the planet. Neoenergia is part of this movement, contributing energy solutions in a partnership focused on the decarbonization of the event. In terms of energy, 62% of fuel consumption has already been reduced. And, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the mega-event launched the For a Better World movement, in which it brings together sustainability reports, showing what it has already achieved and new goals to continue evolving.

Among them, the involvement of sponsors and suppliers in its sustainability policy stands out, including Neoenergia. With projects such as Amazonia Live and funding from the Socioenvironmental Institute, Rock in Rio offsets 100% of its carbon, including the planting of trees in the Amazon — the largest tropical forest in the world, essential for the maintenance of the entire planet's ecosystem. To date, 73 million trees have been planted.

The festival has also been certified ISO20121 — Sustainable Events since 2013, being one of the pioneers in this achievement. Thus, Rock in Rio guarantees, in addition to a lot of music, a commitment to sustainability before, during and after each edition.

Sustainability around the world

In addition to the traditional edition in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, Rock in Rio plays international stages. Portugal, Spain and the United States are countries that also rely on the festival and its sustainable actions.

At Rock in Rio Lisboa, the goal of zero waste was achieved, without any waste from the event ending up in landfills. Brazil is on track: 80% is the recycling rate in the country's edition. And the World Stage, the largest in the City of Rock, is all made of recyclable steel.

In the first Spanish edition, in 2008, through the project For a Better World, more than 700,000 dollars were donated for carbon compensation, and 20 schools were equipped with solar panels.

Rock in Rio: a story of pure energy

Placing Brazil on the international circuit of great artists, Rock in Rio is marked by moments that went down in history. The 1985 edition marked the first time that the audience of a major concert was fully illuminated, with 2 million watts, attentive to the 80-meter stage at the end of the scene - the largest ever seen at the time.

This then new technology, connecting artist and audience, contributed to one of the most remarkable moments in the history of music: the Brazilian audience singing Love of My Life, a hit by Queen, and thrilling the lead singer Freddie Mercury.

To this day, the event's sustainable energy continues to spread and schools, hospitals, and entire communities are benefiting from it. Through the Energy Efficiency Program, regulated by ANEEL, Neoenergia will replace conventional lamps in these places with more economical LEDs. The number of replacements will be equivalent to the audience at Rock in Rio and The Town, another megafestivals of music created by the creators of the Rio de Janeiro event, also sponsored by Neoenergia.
