Respect for the environment, a differentiated value

Respect for the environment is one of Neoenergia's values and its management is incorporated through corporate sustainable development policies.

Aiming to align the environmental dimension with its sustainable business model and with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Neoenergia has an environmental management system that adopts Iberdrola's global corporate guidelines. This system allows the development of a permanent, global and homogeneous diagnosis of the company's environmental performance.

Iberdrola group has developed the Environmental Management System, with the purpose of creating a common environmental structure among the Group's companies that allows measuring and assessing the group's environmental performance from the point of view of the life cycle, in addition to coordinating different plans and measures, respecting regional autonomy standards and specificities of each country.

Thus, the Environmental Management System translates corporate environmental policies into environmental guidelines:

Being environmentally sustainable means reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and being more efficient in the production and use of energy, as well as complying with environmental legislation and using the best international practices related to the theme. Thus, Neoenergia proposes to promote innovation and eco-efficiency and to progressively reduce environmental impacts in the activities developed by it, so that energy becomes a sustainable engine of the economy and an ally of balanced development.

In this sense, Neoenergia has an Environmental Management System (EMS) based on the NE-EN-ISo14001:2004 standard, widespread and implemented in most of its projects: Elektro, Celpe, Usina Tubarão, Termopernambuco and five HPPs (Itapebi, Baguari, Corumbá, Dardanelos and Teles Pires), in addition to certification of all wind farms in operation in 2019.

In addition, for the first time, Neoenergia releases its own inventory of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) certified by independent auditors. The initiative is part of a series of measures that the company carries out with the purpose of combating climate changes. In the document, it is possible to identify the opportunities and build the necessary strategies to achieve the goal of neutralizing carbon emissions by 2050, including investment in renewable energy, which corresponds to 86.8% of Neoenergia's generation installed capacity. In addition, the audited inventory provides transparency and credibility to the data, promoting continuous improvement in environmental management.

The survey, carried out in accordance with the guidelines of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, covers Neoenergia's energy generation in renewable (wind and hydro power), liberalized (thermal) and networks (transmission and distribution). The intensity of Neoenergia's emission in 2019 was 70 grams of Co2 per kilowatt/hour of energy generated, a number below the global target for 2030 of 100 grams of CO2 per Mwh generated set by Iberdrola, group of which the company is part. This was the first time that the inventory entered the public record of GHG information, reinforcing Neoenergia's performance with transparency and the disclosure of its information.
