Almost 140 thousand LED lamps were installed by Neoenergia in 17 Higher Education Federal and State Institutions located in Bahia, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte and São Paulo. The figures refer to lamp replacements carried out between May 2019 and October 2020 in the four states. The initiative is a part of the Building Efficiency project, under the Energy Efficiency program implemented by Neoenergia’s distributors - Coelba, Celpe, Cosern and Elektro - and regulated by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL). With the actions, the institutions obtain an average saving of 40% in energy consumption in the lighting system.

The design consists of replacing inefficient lamps, such as compact fluorescent and tubular or incandescent, with new ones with LED technology. The replacement represents a gain in energy efficiency, both due to savings of the resource and the reduction of the energy bill. The entire replacement process, from the removal of the old lamps to the appropriate disposal, as well as the installing of LED lamps, is performed by companies contracted by the distributors. In addition, the benefited institution has access to lectures and information on the rational and safe use of electric energy," says Neoenergia’s Energy Efficiency manager, Ana Christina Mascarenhas.

The initiative is in line with Neoenergia's commitment to invest in energy efficiency programs focused on sustainable development. LED lamps use less energy despite having the same luminous flux as fluorescent lamps, resulting in a more sustainable and efficient model. In addition, their useful live is four times longer than a fluorescent lamp and do not contain toxic materials in their composition, such as mercury.

To participate in the project, the institution must meet some requirements, such as being a government’s consumer unit or non-profit institution with an essentially philanthropic or caring nature. In addition, the building must be owned and located in the concession municipalities under the responsibility of Neoenergia's distributors. All those fitting in the requirements can send e-mail to eficiencia@neoenergia.com for assessment of the request and technical feasibility.

BENEFITED INSTITUTIONS

Neoenergia made a survey of all higher education federal and state institutions that was benefited from the project last year. At Celpe, the company’s concessionaire in Pernambuco, 66,261 Led lamps were installed from May 2019 to September 2020. The actions were held in Instituto Federal de Pernambuco (IFPE), Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE) and Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), in five cities - Recife, Vitória de Santo Antão, Abreu e Lima, Serra Talhada and Cabo de Santo Agostinho. The program foresees 4,500 new lamps at UFPE, in addition to the 53,000 already installed at the university.

At Cosern, Neoenergia’s distributor in Rio Grande do Norte, 35,610 LED lamps were installed from March to September 2020 only. The initiative included five institutions: Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido (UFERSA), Instituto Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN), Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Instituto de Educação Superior Presidente Kennedy (IFESP) and Universidade do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte (UERN) in three cities - Caraúbas, Natal and São Gonçalo do Amarante. The plan is that UFRN, which has already been benefited in Macaíba campus, will also be granted in Natal campus with 5,200 lamps installed.

In bahia, where Coelba operates, 26,267 Led lamps were installed from May to June 2020. The replacement was granted for four institutions - Universidade Federal do Recôncavo da Bahia (UFRB), Instituto Federal de Educação da Bahia (IFBA), Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia (UESB) and Universidade do Estado da Bahia (UNEB) in seven cities - Salvador, Cruz das Almas, Amargosa, Ipiaú, Vitória da Conquista, Senhor do Bonfim and Itaberaba. The plan is to extend the program to IFBA Eunápolis Campus and Escola Politécnica of the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA).

In São Paulo, considering the 223 cities comprised into Elektro‘s concession area, the amount of lamps installed reaches 10,686 in the last four months. The benefited institutions were: Instituto Federal de Educação de São Paulo (IFSP), Universidade Virtual do Estado de São Paulo (UNIVESP), Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) and Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCAR) in four cities – Registro, Iporanga, Limeira and Araras. In the next months, the program will be extended to UNESP campus located in Rosana, as well as the installation of additional 5,412 lamps in UNICAMP and UFSCAR.
