G1 news website Highlights archaeological finds in Baixo Iguaçu HPP area
Circles carved out in rocks that may date back up to 5,000 years ago are being studied by Brazilian and Portuguese archaeologists in the area where the Baixo Iguaçu Hydro Power Plan reservoir was formed in southwestern Paraná. The study was featured on the news website G1, in an article published last January 29th. According to experts heard by the website, the prints located in the city of Capitão Leonidas Marques do not resemble any other record found in the region.
According to participating archaeologists, such prints may be the earliest records of rock art in the region. At the moment, the prints are being listed by the specialists under the supervision of the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan). In the first half of January, the entity delimited the area as an archaeological site and named it Vista Alta.
The first archaeological studies were carried out in 2014 by the teams that participated in the mapping of Baixo Iguaçu HPP reservoir area. In the area of 500 square meters of the Vista Alta Archaeological Site about 150 prints have been identified.
