COP-30 in Brazil: what to expect from the largest global meeting on climate change in 2025
Resuming its leading role in combating the reduction of environmental impacts, Brazil will host the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP-30) in Belém, Pará, between November 10 and 21, 2025.
More than 40,000 people are expected to participate on the busiest days, including global leaders, scientists, representatives from the private sector and civil society, gathered to discuss solutions and commitments to confront the climate crisis.
What is COP and why is it important?
Held by the United Nations (UN) since 1995, the Conference of the Parties (COP) is the main global event on climate change. During the meeting, the countries that are part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) evaluate the progress of environmental policies and discuss new commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate environmental impacts.
Over the years, COP editions have resulted in important agreements for global climate governance, such as:
Kyoto Protocol (1997): The first major international climate treaty, which established targets for reducing emissions in developed countries.
Paris Agreement (2015): Signed at COP-21, it defined global objectives to limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
Loss and Damage Fund (2022): Considered one of COP's greatest achievements, it provides financial assistance to developing countries that are vulnerable to the climate emergency.
In addition to formal negotiations between governments, COP also provides space for innovation and knowledge exchange, promoting solutions to accelerate the transition to a sustainable economy.
What will be the main topics discussed at COP-30?
According to the Brazilian government, COP-30 will continue the guidelines of the Paris Agreement, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, and the discussions of previous editions. The central themes will include:
- Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions;
- Adaptation to climate change;
- Climate finance;
- Renewable energy technologies;
- Preservation of forests and biodiversity;
- Climate justice.
What is the mascot of COP-30?
The mascot chosen to represent COP-30, hosted in Brazil, is the curupira, a legend from national folklore known as the guardian of the forests, originating in the beliefs of the indigenous peoples of the North region. With his red hair and backward-facing feet, he protects nature against invaders and hunters, using his cunning to confuse those who try to exploit the forest in a predatory manner.
The choice of the curupira as the symbol of the event reinforces the importance of environmental preservation and highlights Brazil's role in the global climate agenda. In addition to carrying a strong cultural meaning, the mascot helps to convey the message that protecting forests and biodiversity is essential to combat climate change.
Throughout the conference, the curupira will be present in promotional materials, educational campaigns and engagement actions, seeking to raise awareness among the public about the urgency of the environmental agenda.
Why is COP-30 so relevant for Brazil?
COP-30 in Brazil represents an opportunity for the country to reinforce its leadership role in global climate discussions and present advances in sectors such as renewable energy, biofuels and sustainable agriculture. In addition to the diplomatic impact, the event also promises to boost the local economy, boosting tourism, trade and job creation, in addition to reinforcing the country's historical role as host of landmark sustainability events, such as ECO-92 and Rio+20.
To coordinate its organization, the federal government created, in March 2024, the Extraordinary Secretariat for COP-30 (Secop), linked to the Civil House. To date, infrastructure investments in Belém have already totaled almost R$5 billion, with resources from BNDES, Itaipu and the General Budget of the Union.
In addition to the logistical challenges, Brazil will play a central role in climate negotiations, articulating commitments and ensuring the necessary structure to receive thousands of participants. As part of this commitment, the event's organization plans to adopt sustainable measures, such as offsetting carbon emissions and encouraging the circular economy, reinforcing the need for an event aligned with global environmental goals.
Neoenergia and Iberdrola at COP-30
A agenda do evento será divulgada no site oficial do encontro.
