Neoenergia: support for COP30 reinforces electrification of the economy as a path to decarbonization and energy security
The R$350 million project to decarbonize Fernando de Noronha, launched on Saturday (8), marks the beginning of the company's participation in the climate conference
Neoenergia, one of the main companies in the Brazilian electricity sector and the country's leading energy distributor, announced on Monday (10) its support, through official Gold sponsorship, for COP30, which is being held in Belém, Pará. With this initiative, the company reaffirms its commitment to the electrification of the economy as a strategic path towards decarbonization, supported by renewable sources, greater energy accessibility and more resilient networks. Currently, 90% of the energy generated by Neoenergia comes from clean sources.
Ignacio Galán, CEO of Iberdrola and Chairman of the Board of Neoenergia, took part last Thursday (6) and Friday (7) in the Leaders' Summit, an event that preceded the opening of COP 30. During the Energy Transition Climate Session (7/11), Ignacio Galán stressed that "by working together, the public and private sectors can guarantee a secure, competitive and, of course, clean energy supply, thus creating a fairer and more sustainable society worldwide. You can count on our full commitment to contribute to these goals".
In addition, Neoenergia will participate in debates on the future of the electricity sector, the commitments of the Paris Agreement and the advance of a new electrified economy, supported by investments in modernization and digitalization of networks.
In the Group's view, electrification is the fundamental pillar for guaranteeing strategic autonomy, industrial competitiveness and environmental sustainability, like the Noronha Verde project in Fernando de Noronha. The initiative will decarbonize the archipelago with an investment of more than R$ 350 million, which reinforces the Group's view that the electrification of the economy is a vector for decarbonization, development and business opportunities.
Global demand for electricity will double in the next 15 years due to technological advances, which make electrification an unstoppable process. From transport to building air conditioning, digitalization, data processing and artificial intelligence, all of today's major inventions are based on electricity. With the advance of renewable sources, the electrification of productive sectors and the exponential growth in demand for energy, Brazil faces a challenge: modernizing its electricity infrastructure to guarantee a stable, safe and affordable supply.
"Today, Neoenergia's strategy is centered on networks. Our Strategic Plan 2025-2028 foresees investments of R$30 billion - mainly in distribution and part in transmission - aimed at modernizing and expanding electricity grids. In distribution, our focus is on digitalization, efficiency and quality of service. These investments accelerate the energy transition and reinforce electrification in all sectors of the economy.Brazil plays a strategic role in this movement and, during COP30, it will be able to show the world that it is possible to reconcile economic growth and sustainability," says Eduardo Capelastegui, CEO of Neoenergia.
To meet these challenges, Neoenergia is currently one of the companies investing the most in the country. In 2024, it was the company that invested the most in infrastructure in Brazil, according to a survey by ABDIB (Brazilian Association of Infrastructure and Basic Industries): R$9.8 billion was earmarked mainly for the expansion and modernization of networks, aimed at the continuous improvement of services.
With a focus on reducing emissions and decarbonizing difficult-to-transition activities through integrated renewable generation solutions, long-term contracts (PPAs), storage and energy efficiency, Neoenergia is developing electrification initiatives in strategic areas. The company has corporate sustainability targets for 2025 and 2030, approved by the Board of Directors and aligned with the UN's 2030 Agenda and the ten principles of the Global Compact.
Projects in strategic territories
Here are some of Neoenergia's projects that reflect the concept of a just and integrated transition, connecting technological innovation, environmental preservation and social benefits:
- Noronha Verde (PE) - With an investment of R$ 350 million, this pioneering project in the country will install more than 30,000 photovoltaic solar panels integrated with advanced battery storage systems (BESS), with the aim of decarbonizing the island's energy generation by 2027.
- Green Hydrogen Unit (DF) - One of Brazil's first green hydrogen plants, with an investment of more than R$30 million, will supply light and heavy vehicles and will be powered by solar energy, paving the way for the use of green hydrogen as an energy vector for decarbonization. The project is part of the P&DI Program, regulated by Aneel.
- Carbon2Nature Brasil - Neoenergia's joint venture with Iberdrola's Carbon2Nature, develops solutions for generating high-quality carbon credits. In partnership with Biomas, the company is co-developing the Muçununga Project, an initiative to restore 1,200 hectares of Atlantic Forest in the south of Bahia, with an investment of R$ 55 million in the planting of 2 million seedlings of more than 70 native species by 2027 and expected to generate approximately 525,000 carbon credits over 40 years.
- Electricians' School - Created in 2013 to offer free professional training in concession areas, it has a partnership with SENAI and the Technology Support Foundation (FAT). More than 6,000 students have already graduated, including more than 1,000 women, about 75% of whom were hired by the company. Neoenergia's project - which was the first in the sector to open classes exclusively for women - was recognized by UN Women and was highlighted at the World Economic Forum as a global benchmark for diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Alto Paranaíba Transmission Line (MG-SP) - an investment of R$1.9 billion in expanding the electricity infrastructure, ensuring greater stability for the system and integrating new renewable sources into the national grid.
- Coralizar (PE) - Initiative of the Neoenergia Institute in partnership with Biofábrica de Corais, dedicated to the restoration of coral reefs and the conservation of marine biodiversity. Since 2019, almost 7,000 corals have been managed in Porto de Galinhas and Tamandaré. To date, it has impacted more than 7,000 young people and children with educational activities.
- Observatório das Baixadas - The Neoenergia Institute supports the Observatório das Baixadas, a collective of young climate leaders, and its initiative to create the Atlas das Baixadas, a digital platform that gives communities a voice in creating solutions for regions close to rivers and sea level. The population of these areas is among the most exposed to flooding and extreme droughts, which reinforces the importance of initiatives aimed at climate adaptation and resilience.
- PerifaConnection - As one of the member institutions of the Observatório das Baixadas, Perifa is a platform for connecting the peripheries and one of its objectives is to strengthen the participation of young people in decision-making spaces. Neoenergia will support Perifa with the 'Delegation of the Peripheries towards COP30', seeking to promote the participation of 10 young leaders from the Brazilian peripheries. The aim is to contribute to a social legacy, reinforcing the presence of peripheral youth at the center of the climate debate and strengthening their role in climate justice and adaptation agendas.
Recognition and sustainability indexes
Neoenergia is a constant presence among the leading companies in corporate sustainability. It is part of the 2025 portfolio of the Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE), where it is the leader in the energy sector, and the IDiversa and ICO₂ indices, from B3, as well as the FTSE4Good Index Series, from the London Stock Exchange, and The Sustainability Yearbook from S&P Global. It also obtained an "A" grade in CDP Climate and a "B" grade in Water Safety, positioning it among the global leaders in environmental management. These recognitions reflect the company's business strategy, focused on accelerating the energy transition, strengthening governance and expanding positive impacts in the communities where it operates.
