Flyways Brazil Project initiative, which works in bird conservation

Waders and their habitats in the Potiguar Basin, is open to the public and will be held in Rio Grande do Sul

Rio de Janeiro, March 15, 2024

The Neoenergia Institute, in partnership with SAVE Brasil, is promoting the Potiguar Basin Shore Bird Festival in Rio Grande do Norte until tomorrow. Free and open to the public, the event will be held in Diogo Lopes, district of the municipality of Macau. The initiative aims to involve society in the conservation of these species and their habitats, the main objectives of the Flyways Brazil Project

.

Through lectures, workshops, exhibitions, field trips to observe animals, and other activities, the festival will also present the importance of the Potiguar Basin for maintaining local biodiversity. In the region, migratory waders — one of the groups most threatened with extinction due to climate change and fundamental to the balance of coastal ecosystems — find the ideal environment for reproductive rest

.

In the Flyways Brasil project, carried out in Macau, Guamaré and Galinhos, Rio Grande do Norte, these species are monitored by specialists. “They map their migratory patterns and behaviors in the face of anthropogenic disturbances, engaging local communities in environmental preservation actions.

This will soon lead to the recognition of the Potiguar Basin as a WHSRN (Western Hemisphere Coastal Bird Reserve Network) site, a title granted to areas of relevance to shorebirds in the hemisphere,” says Renata Chagas, director of the Neoenergia Institute.

The holding of the event is in accordance with the organization's adherence to the Brazilian Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change. The full schedule of the Potiguar Basin Waders Festival is available on their website
