Companies pool resources to promote the use of green hydrogen as a promising alternative for increasingly sustainable mobility

Neoenergia and Honda announced today (27) a strategic collaboration to boost the development of green hydrogen-based initiatives aimed at urban mobility and road transportation in Brazil.

The partnership will be developed at Neoenergia's first green hydrogen refueling station in the country, located in Brasília (DF). The project is part of the Research, Development and Innovation Program (PDI), regulated by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL), with an investment of over R$ 30 million. The vehicle refueling station will open in December 2025.

Honda will be part of the project with the aim of fostering research and innovation, contributing to technological demonstrations and feasibility studies and exploring joint opportunities in the production and use of green hydrogen, with a special focus on urban mobility, as well as industrial applications.

At the filling station, tests and technical validations will be conducted with Honda's CR-V and:FCEV model - a plug-in hybrid electric SUV with a hydrogen fuel cell. The car will be tested for six months.

The aim is to develop complementary alternatives that will help in the process of decarbonizing the automotive sector, contributing to the common goal between the two companies of carbon neutrality by 2050.

"This collaboration reinforces our commitment to innovative solutions that accelerate the electrification and decarbonization of the Brazilian economy.Together with Honda, we are joining forces to develop sustainable technologies that expand business opportunities and consolidate Neoenergia's leadership in the energy transition," says Eduardo Capelastegui, CEO of Neoenergia.

"We are very excited to start this strategic collaboration with Neoenergia in Brazil, a country that has all the conditions to be a world leader in the development of Green Hydrogen. With more than three decades of experience and research in this field, we believe that initiatives like this are fundamental to expanding the possibilities of using hydrogen as a complementary route for the process of decarbonizing mobility and strengthening the path towards a carbon-neutral society," says Arata Ichinose, CEO of Honda Automóveis do Brasil.

Green hydrogen: the fuel of the future

Green hydrogen is produced by electrolysis of water with renewable sources and stands out as a solution for decarbonizing sectors such as heavy transport and industry. Iberdrola, the Spanish company that controls Neoenergia, is one of the leaders in this segment, already operating similar projects in Europe and betting on Brazil as a global benchmark in clean energy and emerging technologies, such as green hydrogen.

Honda: three decades of leadership in hydrogen technology

Honda has been leading the development of hydrogen-based technologies for over 30 years and sees this element as one of the pillars for achieving its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. In addition to commercial vehicles, the company invests in applications such as stationary generators and construction machinery, consolidating its leadership in sustainable solutions for different sectors.

The technology used in hydrogen-fueled vehicles is based on fuel cells that convert hydrogen into electricity efficiently and cleanly. The stored green hydrogen reacts with oxygen in the air to generate electricity, which powers the vehicle's battery and electric motor.

All this happens quietly, efficiently and without the emission of polluting gases, releasing only water through the exhaust. It's a clean, sustainable and innovative solution, ready to transform the future of mobility.
