Neoenergia's emission reduction targets are validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)
Company commits to international organization to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain by 2039, starting from the base year of 2021;
Announcement comes as Neoenergia takes part in COP30, reinforcing the company's commitment to sustainability
Neoenergia had its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) - an organization that helps companies define these parameters. The company has committed itself to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain by 2039, starting from the base year of 2021.
The announcement comes at a time when Neoenergia is actively participating in COP30, in Belém (PA). As a Gold Sponsor of the event, the company is reinforcing its role in the global climate agenda and positioning itself as a protagonist in the energy transition, helping the country to present concrete results and examples of leadership in clean energy during the international conference.
The validation of the SBTi represents recognition of Neoenergia's commitment to promoting sustainability in its businesses, which aim to modernize and expand services for the continuous improvement of customers. The ratification is strategic, as it contributes directly to the fulfillment of the performance indicators (KPIs) linked to the financing agreement signed in June 2022 with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the financial arm of the World Bank. The financing totals R$550 million and is aimed at Neoenergia Coelba, the Neoenergia Group's distributor in the state of Bahia, where around 6 million customers are served.
"The validation of our goals by SBTi is a milestone that reaffirms Neoenergia as a protagonist of the energy transition in Brazil and becomes even more relevant with our presence at COP30. We remain committed to anticipating solutions that unite innovation, sustainability and the creation of value for society as a whole.This international recognition reinforces that our actions are aligned with the Paris Agreement, placing Neoenergia at the forefront of a low-carbon economy," says Eduardo Capelastegui, CEO of Neoenergia.
SBTi is an organization formed by global reference institutions such as CDP, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Wide Fund (WWF) and the We Mean Business Coalition, which supports companies in setting targets for reducing GHG emissions. These targets are in line with climate science and aim to limit global warming to 1.5°C, contributing to a responsible energy transition in line with the Paris Agreement.
In addition to the global commitment, Neoenergia's validation includes the following targets:
- Reduce Scope 1 GHG emissions per MWh of power generation by 73% by 2030 and 85% by 2039, starting from the base year of 2021;
- Reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions from fuel and energy-related activities, covering all electricity sold, by 73% per MWh by 2030 and 83% per MWh by 2039;
- Reduce the absolute remaining Scope 3 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030 and 90% by 2039.
