Neoenergia entrega primeira fase do projeto que irá descarbonizar a Ilha de Fernando de Noronha

Neoenergia delivers first phase of project to decarbonize Fernando de Noronha Island

5/15/26

Completion of the first stage represents 15% of the total capacity of the Noronha Verde Project's solar plant;

Project reaches 4,800 solar panels installed and begins energy injection tests;

By the end of the year, more than 30,000 solar panels will have been installed on the archipelago, recognized as a World Natural Heritage Site.

A milestone in the energy transition and the decarbonization of energy generation in the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, the Green Noronha Project has had its first phase completed by Neoenergia, with the installation of 4,800 solar panels and the start of power injection tests on the island's electricity grid.

In line with the schedule announced in November during the project's launch ceremony - which brought together Iberdrola's CEO, Ignacio Galán, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, Neoenergia's CEO, Eduardo Capelastegui, and the governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra - around 15% of the more than 30,000 solar panels have already been installed on the island, recognized as a World Natural Heritage Site by Unesco. The plant is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026 and represents an investment of R$350 million.

The Noronha Verde Solar Power Plant will have photovoltaic panels connected to advanced battery systems (BESS) and, when completed, will have a generating capacity of 22 MWp, with 49 MWh from the BESS system, equivalent to the consumption of 9,000 homes on the mainland. Currently, the energy consumed in Fernando de Noronha is generated by the Tubarão Plant, using predominantly biodiesel.

The initiative has a partnership with the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Mines and Energy, and the State Government of Pernambuco. The project has been licensed by the Pernambuco State Environment Agency, with the consent of ICMBio, the Federal Conservation Unit manager.

The Green Noronha Plant is part of the More for Noronha Program, a set of actions that includes sustainable mobility, technological innovation and the expansion of non-polluting energy sources in the territory.

"The decarbonization of energy generation on the island of Fernando de Noronha was a commitment made by Neoenergia to society as a whole. The delivery of the first phase of the Green Noronha Plant, within the timeframe agreed with the Federal and State governments, reiterates the company's commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation," says the CEO of Neoenergia Pernambuco, Saulo Cabral.

"Today marks progress in the energy transition and decarbonization of Fernando de Noronha. The Green Noronha Plant goes hand in hand with the Pernambuco Government's commitment to sustainability, encouraging the generation of clean energy. A place can only be good for its visitors when it is good for its residents. Neoenergia Pernambuco is a partner of our government in this project, which is sure to make a difference in preserving the environment," said the governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra.

More for Noronha

The Green Noronha Plant marks another stage in the More for Noronha Program. Over the years, Neoenergia has been investing in the island's sustainability. The program also brings together sustainable mobility actions, technological innovation and incentives for distributed microgeneration. The initiatives include:

  • Installation of solar water heating systems in inns in 2009, replacing electric showers in 17 inns;

  • Replacement of old fridges with new ones and delivery of energy-efficient light bulbs to residents;

  • Implementation of the first nine photovoltaic systems in homes, businesses, public bodies and NGOs;

  • Construction of the Noronha I and II solar power plants, which accounted for 10% of the archipelago's electricity consumption;

  • Installation of two solar plants to supply electric vehicles, with 12 electric stations at strategic points on the island, as part of the Trilha Verde project, in partnership with eiON, CPqD, WEG and Renault;

  • Providing 14 electric vehicles for circulation on the island, including a 100% electric buggy for tourism;

  • Encouraging the use of electric bicycles, with two free charging stations;

  • Replacement of all electricity meters, making Noronha the first place in the Northeast with Intelligent Electricity Networks (REIs).

  • In November 2025, the archipelago's first Floating Solar Photovoltaic Plant was inaugurated, installed on the water mirror of the Xaréu Dam. The unit has a capacity of 622 kWp and an estimated generation of 1,083 MWh/year, enough to supply around 50% of Compesa's energy consumption on the island and avoid the emission of 717 tons of CO₂ per year.

  • The projects developed by Neoenergia in Fernando de Noronha reinforce the company's commitment to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The work underway is related to SDG 7 (clean and affordable energy), 9 (innovation industry and infrastructure), 11 (sustainable cities and communities) and 17 (partnerships and means of implementation).
