ESG Practices and Conscious Energy Consumption

The ESG (Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance) movement or, in Portuguese, ASG (Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance) has been increasingly used to assess the environmental, social and governance performance of companies. Practices such as the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the use of renewable energy and efficient waste management, among others, have been increasingly common in companies.

In
2021, the Neoenergia Group, which distributes electricity in Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Bahia, the Federal District and 224 municipalities in São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul, structured a governance system based on ESG+F criteria (environmental, social and governance + finance). In 2022, the company announced 16 goals to be achieved in 2025 and 2030, previously approved by the Board of Directors. They consider the evaluated themes as materials for sustainable management and commitment to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

With a focus on decarbonization, Neoenergia is committed to reducing the intensity of carbon emissions in its energy generation to 20gCO2/kWh by 2030. The commitment to electrify the light car fleet by 50% by 2030 and to provide a “Green Corridor” between Natal and Salvador for electric vehicle charging are two more ESG commitments adopted by the company, which has also made considerable progress in women's empowerment and gender equality.

Through the Energy Efficiency Program of the five distributors, regulated by ANEEL, R$ 1.4 billion has already been invested from 2008 to 2024 in various projects, generating savings of around 950 GWh/year — a volume of energy sufficient to meet the consumption of almost two months in the entire state of Rio Grande do Norte, for example. With the Vale Luz project, 2,502 tons of solid waste were collected and recycled in 2024 in the five concession areas and R$ 1.4 million was granted in discounts on electricity bills for about 15,000 families. On another front of action, 4,000 public or non-profit institutions (NGOs) benefited from the exchange of more than 355,000 LED lamps and were awarded the installation of 64 photovoltaic solar systems with an installed power of 6.5 MWP.

These Energy Efficiency initiatives contribute both to the future of the planet, through decarbonization, and to the domestic economy of low-income families, especially in the Northeast. These are ESG practices that, while educating and transforming realities, reinforce Neoenergia's commitment to the safe and conscious use of energy.
