Does unplugging TV set from the switch when not watching actually help to save energy? Changing lamp bulbs for LED models? And increasing air-conditioning temperature? These are some of the simple actions that may be adopted as a daily routine to reduce consumption. Neoenergia's energy efficiency manager, Ana Christina Mascarenhas, warns on the importance of changing habits and uncovers some myths and truths on actions that contribute for saving energy at home:
It is important to unplug mainly TV sets, laptops, microwaves and music systems. Even when fully turned off, these devices continue to consume energy if plugged. Consumption is lower in stand-off mode, but it exists.
For safety purposes, you should pull the plug, not the wire when unplugging, otherwise the wire can be damaged and cause electric shock.
Laptops consume energy even when fully turned off. So, the same advice to unplug applies. And we should remember to not only disconnecting the laptop charger from the laptop, but also unplug it, as it has an internal circuit that consumes energy if plugged.
However, this is a very low consumption. Power is about 0.022 W, i.e., a monthly cost of 1 cent, if it stays plugged throughout the month.
However, for safety purposes it is recommended to always unplug the charger. Other advices for avoiding accidents include not using the device when charging and always use original cables and chargers.
The lighting amount is determined by the luminous flux, measured by lumens. A 15-W fluorescent lamp has the same lumen amount as a 10-W LED lamp.
This three information - luminous flux (lm), efficiency (lm/W) and power (W) - are described in the labels of all lamps available in the market. The orientation is to prioritize the LED models, which, besides being more efficient, last longer.
Energy saving really happens, but you shouldn't turn it off because some bacteria develop after two hours at room temperature and can cause contamination. Some of them are pathogenic - they don't change the appearance or taste of the food, but can cause diseases.
A gaseous fluid circulates in the serpentine and expands when the compressor runs, this fluid turns into gas and cools the refrigerator. When we open the refrigerator the hot air enters and the thermal exchange with the gas occurs, the compressor is activated to remake the process.
When air temperature of the refrigerator increases, the compressor is activated and consumes energy.
It depends on the efficiency
Consumption depends on the efficiency of the equipment, which can be found on the Inmetro label. A-rated equipment is more economical.
Consumption is the same when we turn on all devices at the same time or in different moments. Energy consumption is determined by the equipment power, multiplied by the amount of hours it is used.
Myth, but it is not safe to connect several devices into the same outlet.
Overcharging the t-benjamin with a current in excess of its capacity can overheat it and even cause fires.
The higher the temperature of the air conditioning thermostat the less energy consumption.
For showers, an important safety guideline is never to change the temperature when wet or with the appliance running, to avoid electric shocks.
Iron consumes more energy to heat. Thus, when passing everything at once, we have energy saving.
Neoenergia's concessionaries – Coelba (BA), Celpe (PE), Cosern (RN) and Elektro (SP/MS) – allocated 0.4% of their Net Operating Revenues (NOR) for actions aimed at combating energy waste. In 2019, the company invested almost R$ 50.5 in initiatives under the Energy Efficiency Program, regulated by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel). Over 222 thousand consumer units were benefitted and the consumption decrease was as high as 58 GWh/year, representing 4,350 tons less greenhouse gas emissions.
“Investments in energy efficiency are reflected in return to the society, the consumer and the environment. We allocate resources to initiatives to reduce demand during peak hours in the electric system and also reduce the energy bill for the consumers", says Ana Christina Mascarenhas, Neoenergia's energy efficiency manager.
Several projects receive investments from Neoenergia's distributors. One of them replace lamps with more efficient models for low-income consumers. In addition, education activities are held through the project called Educação com Energia (Education with Energy). With Vale Luz, the three company's concessionaries in Northeast encourage recycling by granting discount in energy bills in exchange of waste. Other initiatives are in place, such as the installation of photovoltaic solar generation in several consumers, mainly hospitals and charities.
