SBTi Targets

The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) is the leading global initiative for corporate emissions reduction targets aligned with the Paris Agreement. It is a collaboration among leading organizations such as CDP, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Wide Fund (WWF), and the We Mean Business Coalition, which supports companies in setting greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets.

These goals are science-based and aim to combat climate change by limiting global warming to 1.5°C and contributing to a responsible energy transition.

Companies that take action to reduce their environmental impact contribute to a more sustainable and better future—not only for the communities where they operate but for society as a whole and the global economy.

In 2021, the European Union committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 across its entire territory, and the Science Based Targets initiative is fundamental to this process.

Neoenergia and SBTi: Emissions Reduction Targets Validated by the Initiative

Neoenergia had its GHG reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) in 2025. The company has committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 2039, using 2021 as the baseline year.

The SBTi validation reinforces Neoenergia’s commitment to the transition to a low-carbon economy, in line with international best practices and the scientific criteria of the Paris Agreement. This recognition indicates that the company is on the right track, promoting sustainable, value-driven actions in its business operations.

Structure of the Targets Validated by the SBTi

In addition to the global commitment, Neoenergia's approval includes the following goals:

Overall Net-Zero Emissions Target

Neoenergia is committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 2039, using 2021 as the base year.

Short-Term Targets

Neoenergia is committed to reducing Scope 1 GHG emissions per MWh of electricity generated by 73% by 2030, using 2021 as the base year*, in addition to its commitment to reduce Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions from fuel- and energy-related activities—covering all electricity sold—by 73% per MWh over the same period.*

Reducing the remaining absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 42% over the same period is also one of Neoenergia S.A.’s short-term goals.

Long-Term Goals

Neoenergia is committed to reducing Scope 1 GHG emissions per MWh of electricity generation by 85% by 2039, using 2021 as the base year* and is also committed to reducing Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions from fuel- and energy-related activities—covering all electricity sold—by 83% per MWh over the same period.*

In addition, Neoenergia S.A. is committed to reducing the remaining absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 90% over the same period.

* The scope of the targets includes emissions and removals related to the use of bioenergy
