The energy coming from the winds:  this is the basic principle of the wind power. Brazil has a huge potential for development in this area. De-carbonization and combating climate change are in the core of the economy resumption. Neoenergia believes that, due to this, the prioritization of clean sources, such as wind and solar, should play a key role in the major companies. Check here some interesting points on the theme:

01 - HOW IS THE ENERGY PROVIDED BY THE WINDS TRANSFORMED INTO WIND POWER?

The wind force drives the blades. This mechanical movement is then conveyed to an internal multiplication box, responsible for boosting the energy created therefrom. The box, connected to a generator, transforms mechanical energy into electric energy. That's why the towers we see with their three rotating blades are called wind turbines. Each unit, according to its power, is capable of supplying, on average, 9 thousand people with moderate consumption. And this power has been increasingly higher, requiring less area to be built.

02 - FROM WHEN DOES MANKIND CAPTURE ENERGY FROM THE WINDS?

Wind potential has been used by humans for over 3,000 years, either through the use of windmills or for navigation at sea. But the purpose of generating electric energy only emerged at the end of the 19th century. However, the use of wind energy was only accelerated from the 1970s, with the advent of the oil crisis in Europe, which has lead nations to seek alternative energy sources.

3 - DO YOU KNOW THAT WIND ENERGY IS A RENEWABLE SOURCE?

This means that it does not harm the environment, being a virtually inexhaustible and non-polluting resource. As a result, the option for using wind energy plays an important role in combating climate change. For example, 500 MW generated by a wind farm is enough to supply over 1.1 million households, avoiding the emission of over 830 thousand tons of CO² into the atmosphere.

4 - IS IT TRUE THAT THE MAJOR WIND FARMS IN BRAZIL ARE LOCATED IN THE NORTHEAST?

Yes, but the energy generated from the winds is not restricted to the Northeast region. In total, according to ABEEÓLICA data, there are 619 wind farms in the country, with 15.4 GW of installed capacity. Bahia state has the highest number, with 153 farms and 3.93 GW of installed capacity. Next is Rio Grande do Norte, with 151 farms, generating 4.06 GW. Rio Grande do Sul is in the third position, with 80 farms and 1.83 GW of installed capacity.

5.    HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF OFFSHORE WIND FARMS?

That's right! It is possible to generate wind energy offshore (when occurring in open sea) and onshore (existing on land). Both follow the same principle, the difference being that the winds usually reach higher speeds away from the coast. Offshore wind energy is an alternative used in small countries, such as some European nations. In Brazil, many areas are still available with excellent wind conditions to develop onshore farms.
